A BOY SHOT DEAD AT LILONGWE

Police in Lilongwe have accidentally shot dead a 15-year-old boy, Precious Banda for trying to break into a shop at Bwalo la Njobvu area on Thursday.









Banda and his two friends were doing business of selling bottled water in Lilongwe City as a way of earning their basic needs on their daily life.

In an interview with Lilongwe Police Station Spokesperson, Hastings Chigalu said the deceased and two colleagues went to a live show at Lilongwe Golf Club, but were chased by the Criminal Investigation Department Officers (CDIO).

“We are keeping in custody two other children identified as Brian Kalulu aged 12 and Vitumbiko Mhango aged 20 who were picked up on the same time Banda was shot,” he added.

According to Precious’s mother, Margret Ziyera said he was in standard 6, later on dropped out of school to start a small business, unfortunately disappeared from home for two weeks. 

Ziyera lives at Chigumula with the rest of her family in Blantyre. 

“My son was not a thief, I raised him with values. I even went to Limbe Police to inquire about his whereabouts because he left home without a trace,” she lamented.

Commenting on the matter, the Malawi Human Rights Commission Spokesperson, Kate Kujaliwa said that every life is sacred and that no one has right to take another person’s life.

“The MHRC have launched an investigation to establish what led to the shooting of Precious Banda by the police,” Kujalawa added.
